Six Characteristics to Avoid When Searching For Properties
Even though each person has different tastes and outlooks, some properties should be avoided at all cost. While you may think that the price is good, or the house is charming, you will find that other aspects will cause you no end of misery. Therefore, you should consider the inconveniences associated with the following traits in mind before you purchase or rent properties that have them.
Characteristic 1: Ground Floor or Lower Apartments
Typically, apartments located on the ground floor of a building tend to be cheaper. Aside from being darker, ground floor rooms also tend to be damper. If the area is often subject to flash flooding, you are likely to find that these rooms, and everything in them will be affected. In many cases, landlords also tend to put trash bins and other items below windows at the ground floor. You are also likely to find that ground floor apartments are broken into more often. Even if the windows have metal grilles over them, you will run a higher risk of theft and other problems. Finally, there is no question that you will always hear stomping and noise from upstairs neighbours.
Characteristic 2: Top Floor Apartments Without Elevators in the Building
While rooms on the first floor of a building tend to be more comfortable and sunny, they also come with a number of disadvantages. Aside from being more expensive, you will always have to climb stairs to get to them. Initially, you may not think it is very important to be without an elevator. That said, each time you go shopping, you will realize the inconvenience of having to constantly climb stairs. To make matters worse, if you get injured, or develop some other difficulty, you will find the necessity of climbing stairs even more inconvenient.
Characteristic 3: Properties Situated Near Areas With High Traffic Volume
When a property is located near a busy road, you will always hear traffic passing. While you may not mind the sound of cars quietly passing, there is nothing worse than honking horns or loud mufflers when you have a headache or insomnia. Houses surrounded by heavy traffic will always be subject to higher levels of air pollution. Unfortunately, when it comes time to resell these properties, you may also find that it is much harder than anticipated.
Characteristic 4: Trains or Tubes Nearby
Many streets in London have tubes or train tracks located nearby. While you may think that is convenient, the noise and rattling created by these facilities will affect you all day long. Typically, if you hear a rumbling sound, or notice items shaking in the home, you can rest assured that everything is being affected by a nearby mass transit facility. Even if things seem fairly quiet during the day, you may find that the situation becomes unbearable between 6:30 pm and midnight.
Characteristic 5: Property is Next to or Above a Business
In almost all cases, you will find it very uncomfortable to live near a restaurant or pub. Typically, things will always get noisier during meal times and evening hours. You will also wind up having to deal with the smell from exhaust fans constantly wafting into your rooms. That said, if you find living quarters near an art gallery, it may be quiet enough to enable you to live peacefully.
Characteristic 6: The Home is Awkward
As strange is it may seem, you will always find homes with odd shaped rooms, or unnatural layouts. In some cases, you may think these houses have some appeal. When you try to live in them, you may find that they are very uncomfortable. For example, you may find it impossible to arrange your furniture in a way that promotes ease of navigation through the rooms. While this may not be of much concern in a large house, it can be an absolute disaster in a smaller one.
In general, you will find that these six property characteristics will make life very unpleasant in your prospective new home. You are also likely to find that other people will avid these characteristics. This, in turn means that you may have a harder time reselling the property if you are unhappy with your choices. That said, you may feel that these issues are of minimal concern when compared to the benefits associated with a particular piece of property. Among other things, you may feel that lower prices will be more useful to you than a good night’s sleep and the ability to resell if you are not happy with your choice.
Jeremy McGivern founded Mercury Homesearch in 2001 having been shocked by the poor service he was being offered by estate agents. Many of the estate agents were actually very good at looking after their clients. Unfortunately as a buyer, you are not their client. London property finders services care for property buyers.
